The Sophie Lena's Series- Elijah Grace Photo Featured; a Small Part in a Big Story about a Service Dog and Her Human
Sometimes life presents opportunities to show up in ways that give small gifts to people and create ripple effects that you don't even know. And while Elijah Grace Photo only had a small part to play in this much larger story, I am SO proud to have been a part of this project at all. Meet Sophie Lena (Black Lab pictured below) and Anya Knecht. Now, Anya is my family but we didn't grow up together and we live states away. Even so, I cherish our hours long phone conversations and annual thanksgiving trip to go visit her on her farm where she grows raspberries, blueberries, keeps chickens, and bees, and the light shines on the old farmhouse just so. And something about last thanksgiving was just different. I felt pulled to take photos while I was there, and so I did! I knew I wanted to take photos of Anya, Sophie, the magic of the Farm described in the Sophie Lena Book Series, and really capture what it was that was so special about being there. I wanted to capture Sophie and Anya's personalities, and keep record of the love shared between them and all of us. I can't imagine that anyone outside of our immediate family will ever grasp exactly what it's meant to us kids to get to spend time there with Anya in a place that feels like you stepped back in time. But I'm sure many families know what it's like to hold moments like this in the time capsule that photographs are. The image below was featured on the back cover of every Sophie Lena Book, and while I'm super excited about that, I am even more excited that the Sophie Lena series has made its debut in the world.
So what is the Sophie Lena Series anyway? Anya says "Sophie Lena’s Series is a heart-warming collection of children’s books told from the wise, loving perspective of a devoted service dog. Inspired by real life, the series follows Sophie Lena and her human through training, travel, hospital days, farm life, friendship, hard moments, and everyday joy. Through Sophie’s eyes, readers learn gentle but powerful lessons about courage, communication, empathy, honesty, boundaries, resilience, leadership, and hope. At the heart of the series is an extraordinary bond between a young woman living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and the service dog who helps her navigate life with love, loyalty, and purpose. Sophie Lena is more than a companion. She is a working dog, a teammate, and a steady presence through moments that are beautiful, difficult, funny, scary, and deeply meaningful. Created for children ages 6–11, these stories help readers understand feelings, face hard moments, and discover the courage to keep going. The series is also a meaningful resource for families, classrooms, counselors, and caregivers looking for empathy-centered stories that support social and emotional learning. Each book offers lessons from Sophie’s life: how trust is built, why communication matters, how kindness and respect shape relationships, how to ask for help, how to set boundaries, how to stay calm under pressure, and how to keep taking the next right step. Books vary in length based on complexity of concept. Sophie’s journey also shows the importance of responsibility, cooperation, gratitude, and perseverance — especially when life feels uncertain. While the books are shaped by real experiences with chronic illness, service dog work, and resilience, they are not only stories about hardship. They are stories about connection, encouragement, purpose, and noticing what matters. They remind readers that bravery does not always roar — sometimes it looks like one small pawstep forward. Sophie Lena’s Series invites readers into a world where love and empathy are active, kindness and compassion are strong, and no one has to face hard things alone."
